What it's good for, and what it isn't

A tough ground-covering perennial that forms a low mound of finely cut leaves, dotted with magenta-pink flowers from late spring into summer, and turns red in autumn. It grows in sun or part shade, copes with limy soil and handles dry spells well once established. It spreads slowly by rhizomes and seed and can eventually crowd out weaker neighbours.

Watch out for
No serious pests or diseases. Leaf spot, rust or mildew occur occasionally, and vine weevil larvae may feed on the roots.
