What it's good for, and what it isn't

Plant it in a sunny perennial border or gravel garden for late-summer and autumn flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Once established, it needs little watering, but good drainage is important because waterlogged soil can cause rot. Leave the dried flower heads standing for winter interest, and avoid rich soil or too much shade, which can make the stems flop.

Watch out for
Waterlogged soil, especially in winter, can cause root and crown rot. Rich soil, excessive watering or shade can make flowering stems flop. Slugs and snails may damage young shoots, while vine weevils can be troublesome, particularly in containers.
