Pinus densiflora 'Umbraculifera'
Tanyosho pine (Pinus densiflora 'Umbraculifera') is a shrub that reaches 2 m × 1.5 m after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: medium.
An umbrella-shaped, multi-stemmed form of Japanese red pine: the stems branch from the base and show orange-red, flaking bark, topped by a flat, parasol-like crown of long, soft, bright green needles and masses of small cones. It grows slowly, reaching about 2 metres in ten years and 3 to 6 metres in time, at least as wide as tall, and makes a fine specimen for a Japanese-style garden, a front garden, the middle of a lawn or a large tub. Give it full sun and free-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil; once established it copes with shorter dry spells, but not with waterlogging.
