What it's good for, and what it isn't

An umbrella-shaped, multi-stemmed form of Japanese red pine: the stems branch from the base and show orange-red, flaking bark, topped by a flat, parasol-like crown of long, soft, bright green needles and masses of small cones. It grows slowly, reaching about 2 metres in ten years and 3 to 6 metres in time, at least as wide as tall, and makes a fine specimen for a Japanese-style garden, a front garden, the middle of a lawn or a large tub. Give it full sun and free-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil; once established it copes with shorter dry spells, but not with waterlogging.

Watch out for
Heavy wet snow and freezing rain can splay or break the spreading stems, so shake deep snow off it. On heavy, wet soil it dies from root suffocation, it does not do well on strongly limy soil, and it will not stand road salt. In Central Europe the fungi that attack two-needled pines, mainly Diplodia tip blight and Dothistroma or Lophodermium needle diseases, can appear on it, mostly on plants weakened by a hot, dry summer. The needles may turn yellowish in winter, which is not a disease. The final size also depends on the rootstock, and pinching back the new shoots (candles) in spring keeps the crown dense.
