Lavandula × intermedia
Lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia) is a perennial that reaches 90 cm × 1 m after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -23 °C. Drought tolerance: high. Sold in local shops from about €4.50.
A bigger, more vigorous hybrid than true lavender: a grey-green, aromatic subshrub that carries long-stemmed, strongly scented flower spikes in summer and draws bees and butterflies. Plant it in full sun in light, free-draining soil, lime is fine; it shrugs off drought but not wet ground in winter. Trim it every year after flowering without cutting into old wood, or it turns bare and leggy.
