What it's good for, and what it isn't

A bigger, more vigorous hybrid than true lavender: a grey-green, aromatic subshrub that carries long-stemmed, strongly scented flower spikes in summer and draws bees and butterflies. Plant it in full sun in light, free-draining soil, lime is fine; it shrugs off drought but not wet ground in winter. Trim it every year after flowering without cutting into old wood, or it turns bare and leggy.

Watch out for
In Central Europe it is somewhat less frost hardy than true lavender: in frost below about minus 18 °C without snow cover, especially in wet, heavy soil, it can die, so give it a sheltered, sunny spot and free-draining ground. Root rot occurs in waterlogged soil and leaf spot in humid, stagnant weather. After some years plants turn woody and bare and are best replaced.
