What it's good for, and what it isn't

In nurseries you will find almost only the dwarf 'Kojo-no-mai': a slow, compact shrub with zigzag twigs that is covered in white, pink-centred blossom in early spring before the leaves, and turns orange-red in autumn. It suits small gardens and large pots, and is also sold grafted on a stem as a miniature tree. Give it sun and well-drained soil that does not dry out, and water it in summer drought.

Watch out for

Like all ornamental cherries it can get blossom wilt and twig dieback (Monilinia), mostly in cool, wet springs: cut dead shoots back to healthy wood. Aphids, caterpillars and occasionally silver leaf can occur. Late spring frost may brown the early flowers. In a pot it needs regular watering in summer.
