What it's good for, and what it isn't

A dense, semi-evergreen shrub whose white flower clusters open from pink buds in April and carry a sweet scent a long way, so plant it near a terrace, door or window. The glossy leaves mostly stay on in mild winters and turn maroon and partly drop in colder ones. It is undemanding and copes well with city air; if it needs pruning, do it right after flowering, because next year's buds form in summer.

Watch out for
Moderately susceptible to viburnum leaf beetle: the larvae can riddle the leaves with holes in spring, but the shrub is rarely killed, and damage is worse in shade. Aphids and leaf spots can occur. The foliage may scorch in a baking, dry position.
