Viburnum × burkwoodii
Burkwood viburnum (Viburnum × burkwoodii) is a shrub. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -23 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Sold in local shops from about €5.90.
A dense, semi-evergreen shrub whose white flower clusters open from pink buds in April and carry a sweet scent a long way, so plant it near a terrace, door or window. The glossy leaves mostly stay on in mild winters and turn maroon and partly drop in colder ones. It is undemanding and copes well with city air; if it needs pruning, do it right after flowering, because next year's buds form in summer.
