What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low, cushion-forming bellflower that almost disappears under starry blue flowers in early summer. It is made for walls, crevices, troughs, rock gardens and the edge of a bed in well-drained soil, and keeps its leaves through a mild winter. The golden-leaved 'Dickson's Gold' scorches in hot sun, so give it afternoon shade, and protect the plants from slugs.

Watch out for
Slugs and snails readily eat the leaves and young shoots, especially in damp, shady spots. It rots in winter in waterlogged, heavy soil, so plant it only where drainage is good. The golden-leaved 'Dickson's Gold' scorches and bleaches in the hot afternoon sun of a Central European summer and needs afternoon shade; the green species and 'Major' cope with sun as long as they are watered in dry spells. Powdery mildew can occur. In a spot it likes it slowly spreads outwards, so divide it every few years.
