What it's good for, and what it isn't

A slow, dense, neatly conical fir with short glossy dark green needles that are silver underneath, and upright violet-blue cones that appear even on young plants, which makes it a good specimen for smaller gardens. It wants a cooler, more humid, sheltered spot and moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil: hot dry summers, waterlogging, heavy clay, paved surroundings and polluted city air all set it back. Water it regularly in summer and mulch the root zone; dwarf forms, such as the ones with curled silvery needles, fit into even smaller spaces.

Watch out for
It struggles in the hot, dry lowland summers of Central Europe: needles may brown and spider mites build up on stressed trees in hot dry weather, so it is not worth trying without irrigation or in a baking, heat-reflecting spot. Root rot can kill it in waterlogged heavy soil. It copes poorly with polluted city air and with paving around its roots. Aphids, adelgids, needle rust and twig blight can also occur.
