Abies koreana
Korean fir (Abies koreana) is a large tree that reaches 2.5 m × 1.5 m after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -29 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Sold in local shops from about CZK 3,000.
A slow, dense, neatly conical fir with short glossy dark green needles that are silver underneath, and upright violet-blue cones that appear even on young plants, which makes it a good specimen for smaller gardens. It wants a cooler, more humid, sheltered spot and moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil: hot dry summers, waterlogging, heavy clay, paved surroundings and polluted city air all set it back. Water it regularly in summer and mulch the root zone; dwarf forms, such as the ones with curled silvery needles, fit into even smaller spaces.
