What it's good for, and what it isn't

A vigorous, upright perennial covered in bright yellow flowers for weeks in summer and asking for almost no care. It looks best in sun or part shade in moist, fertile soil: by a pond, in front of trees and shrubs or in a wild corner. It spreads fast by rhizomes and crowds out weaker neighbours, so plant it only where it has room or where you can hold it back with a root barrier or regular digging out.

Watch out for
The main problem is its spread: in moist, fertile soil it forms a large colony within a few years and moves into lawns and neighbouring perennials. In the dry summers of Central Europe it stays stunted and browns without watering. Rust and leaf spot can occur, and slugs and snails may feed on it.
