What it's good for, and what it isn't

A fast-growing, dense evergreen shrub with glossy, dark green, veined leaves; in late May it carries flat heads of creamy white, lightly scented flowers opening from pink buds. It is the hardiest of the evergreen viburnums and takes clipping well, which makes it excellent as a tall hedge, a screen or a backdrop. Give it moist, well-drained soil and shelter from wind: it dislikes prolonged drought, and winter sun and cold wind can scorch the leaves.

Watch out for
In exposed sites winter sun and cold, dry wind scorch the foliage; below about minus 18 to 20 °C the leaves and shoot tips can brown, and in a very hard winter it can be cut back severely, though it regrows from the base. In the hot, dry summers of Central Europe it needs watering, otherwise it wilts and thins out. Bacterial leaf spot, mildew, aphids and scale occur but are rarely serious. It sets little fruit unless another viburnum grows nearby.
