What it's good for, and what it isn't

A garden form of a wild meadow bellflower: in early summer upright stems carry tight, rounded heads of violet-blue, upward-facing bells that bees and butterflies visit eagerly. It does well in sun or part shade in free-draining soil, lime included, and appreciates some afternoon shade in hot spots. It spreads by rhizomes and self-seeds, and can run in rich, moist ground, so divide it every few years and cut off the spent stems.

Watch out for
Rarely troubled. Slugs and snails may feed on it, and powdery mildew, rust or leaf spot can appear in warm, dry weather. In rich, moist soil its rhizomes creep in among neighbouring plants.
