Campanula glomerata
Clustered bellflower (Campanula glomerata) is a perennial that reaches 50 cm × 60 cm after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Non-toxic to children. Sold in local shops from about €5.
A garden form of a wild meadow bellflower: in early summer upright stems carry tight, rounded heads of violet-blue, upward-facing bells that bees and butterflies visit eagerly. It does well in sun or part shade in free-draining soil, lime included, and appreciates some afternoon shade in hot spots. It spreads by rhizomes and self-seeds, and can run in rich, moist ground, so divide it every few years and cut off the spent stems.
