What it's good for, and what it isn't

The classic big white daisy with a yellow centre that flowers for weeks in summer, cuts well and draws bees and butterflies. Plant it in sun and well-drained soil and deadhead it to keep new flowers coming. It is short-lived, so divide the clumps every two or three years, and tall varieties may flop in very rich soil.

Watch out for
It is short-lived: without division the clumps wear out and die out in the middle within a few years. It cannot stand winter wet and is easily lost in damp, heavy soil. Aphids, leaf miners and spider mites can attack it, and leaf spot, stem rot and verticillium wilt occur. Tall varieties are worth staking.
