What it's good for, and what it isn't

A Norway maple grafted on a tall stem whose dense, dark green crown stays a regular ball without pruning and widens into a flattened globe with age. It grows slowly, turns golden yellow in autumn and is happy in most soils, including limy ones. Bear in mind that over decades the crown can reach 5 to 6 metres across, and little will grow beneath it because of the deep shade and shallow roots.

Watch out for
It is susceptible to verticillium wilt, which can make single branches or the whole crown die back suddenly. In hot, dry, paved sites the leaf edges can scorch in summer, and the bark of the young trunk can crack in winter or summer sun, so shade the trunk in the first years and water during drought. Powdery mildew and leaf spots also occur but are mostly cosmetic.
