What it's good for, and what it isn't

Yellow barrenwort (usually sold as 'Sulphureum') is one of the toughest ground covers for shade: sulphur-yellow flower sprays in spring and heart-shaped leaves flushed reddish bronze when they emerge and again in autumn. Under trees and shrubs, even in dry shade, it steadily knits into a weed-suppressing carpet. Cut the old leaves away in late winter so the flowers and fresh growth show.

Watch out for
No serious pests or diseases. Aphids can occur and may transmit mosaic virus. The foliage persists in mild winters but browns in hard frost and cold, drying winds, so give it a sheltered spot. It needs watering in dry spells for the first year or two until established, and it dislikes hot midday sun.
