Dianthus carthusianorum
Carthusian pink (Dianthus carthusianorum) is a perennial that reaches 50 cm × 25 cm after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -29 °C. Drought tolerance: high. Sold in local shops from about €3.40.
The pink of dry grasslands: thin, wiry stems rise in summer from grassy evergreen tufts and carry tight heads of small magenta flowers that butterflies love. Plant it in gravel and steppe-style beds and among ornamental grasses, in full sun and lean, well-drained soil, where it copes with drought. In rich, watered soil it grows lanky and flops; where it is happy it seeds itself around.
