What it's good for, and what it isn't

The pink of dry grasslands: thin, wiry stems rise in summer from grassy evergreen tufts and carry tight heads of small magenta flowers that butterflies love. Plant it in gravel and steppe-style beds and among ornamental grasses, in full sun and lean, well-drained soil, where it copes with drought. In rich, watered soil it grows lanky and flops; where it is happy it seeds itself around.

Watch out for
It rots in heavy, waterlogged soil, especially in winter. Slugs and aphids may attack it, and rust or Fusarium wilt occurs occasionally.
