Clematis montana
Mountain clematis (Clematis montana) is a climber. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -18 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Toxic to dogs, cats and children. Sold in local shops from about €12.
One of the most vigorous clematis: it climbs by twisting leaf stalks, so it needs wires, a trellis, a fence or an old tree, and will not go up a bare wall on its own. In late spring it is smothered in small white or pink flowers, often with a vanilla scent. It flowers on the previous year's stems, so prune it only straight after flowering, and plant it in a sheltered spot in sun or part shade with its base kept shaded and cool.
