Platycodon grandiflorus
Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) is a perennial that reaches 60 cm × 45 cm after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Sold in local shops from about €3.90.
A long-lived, bushy perennial whose puffed-up, balloon-like buds open in summer into blue, white or pink starry bells. Plant it in sun or part shade in light, well-drained soil and leave it alone, because its fleshy, brittle roots take badly to moving. It comes up very late in spring, so mark the spot to avoid hoeing it out.
