What it's good for, and what it isn't

Deep purple flower spikes and almost black stems work well in sunny borders, alongside ornamental grasses or in larger pots, and attract pollinators. Give it well-drained soil; established plants tolerate heat and drought well. Cut back faded stems after the first flowering flush to encourage another display later in the season.

Watch out for

Winter waterlogging and poorly drained soil can cause root and crown rot and reduce winter survival. Slugs and snails may damage young shoots. Late-season repeat flowering depends on cutting back and available moisture; flowering is not necessarily continuous.
