We filter by light, soil, watering and the winters of your region: what would freeze or dry out in your garden never makes the list.
Plants with similar water needs go side by side, one per genus, and anything that would take over is left out.
Low plants in front, tall ones at the back; the quantities come from mature size and planting distance.
We pick plants so that something is in flower from spring to autumn, there is autumn colour, and structure remains in winter. Bulbs fill early spring.
If children, dogs or cats use the garden, plants that are toxic to them are left out.
