What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low, dense daylily that keeps producing lightly scented golden yellow flowers in flushes from early summer to autumn, so it is rewarding as an edging, in drifts or in pots. It is extremely tough and undemanding: it grows in sun or light part shade in almost any soil and gets through shorter dry spells, though it flowers best when watered in drought. Remove spent flowers and stalks, divide the clump every few years, and if you have a cat choose something else, because daylilies are very dangerous to cats.

Watch out for
The hemerocallis gall midge is spreading in Europe: its larvae live in the early buds, which swell, distort and fail to open; pick off and destroy distorted buds. Daylily rust causes yellowish streaks and orange pustules on the leaves. Slugs may chew the new shoots in spring, and aphids and thrips appear occasionally. If you do not divide it every few years the centre of the clump becomes congested and flowering declines.
Highly toxic
Seriously dangerous to cats: chewing or licking any part of the plant, even the pollen, can cause vomiting, loss of appetite and lethargy followed by acute kidney failure and death, so do not plant it where cats roam and see a vet immediately if you suspect exposure. It is not considered toxic to dogs, at most it causes a mild stomach upset. It is not poisonous to people and the flowers are edible, though in larger amounts they may have a laxative effect.
