What it's good for, and what it isn't

A narrow, columnar flowering cherry with stiffly upright branches: it reaches 4 to 6 metres but stays barely 1 to 1.5 metres wide for many years, so it fits a small garden, the side of an entrance or a border that needs a vertical accent. In late April and early May it is covered in pale pink, semi-double, lightly scented flowers, and the leaves turn orange and red in autumn. Give it sun and well-drained soil; on older trees the branches can splay a little under blossom and snow, and the crown can then be loosely tied together.

Watch out for

In Central Europe the main trouble is blossom wilt and shoot dieback (Monilia): in wet springs the flowers brown and the shoot tips die, so cut back to healthy wood. Bacterial canker with gumming, shot hole, silver leaf and aphids also occur. Infections enter through wounds, so prune only in dry summer weather and only when you must. It does not tolerate waterlogging, and late spring frost can take the blossom. It is not a long-lived tree, and the column loosens with age as the upper branches lean outwards. It is grafted: remove any shoots from the rootstock at their origin.
