Prunus serrulata 'Amanogawa'
Amanogawa cherry (Prunus serrulata 'Amanogawa') is a small tree that reaches 4.5 m × 1.5 m after ten years. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -23 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Toxic to dogs and cats. Sold in local shops from about HUF 9,000.
A narrow, columnar flowering cherry with stiffly upright branches: it reaches 4 to 6 metres but stays barely 1 to 1.5 metres wide for many years, so it fits a small garden, the side of an entrance or a border that needs a vertical accent. In late April and early May it is covered in pale pink, semi-double, lightly scented flowers, and the leaves turn orange and red in autumn. Give it sun and well-drained soil; on older trees the branches can splay a little under blossom and snow, and the crown can then be loosely tied together.
