Black locust and Manna ash are often considered for the same spot in the garden (shade, flowers, pollinator friendly, specimen). The data below shows where they differ: size, hardiness, care, toxicity and price.
Robinia pseudoacacia 8 m × 5 m after 10 years
A fast-growing, drought-tolerant tree from North America with an open crown, pinnate leaves and fragrant white flower clusters in late May. It is sold…
Fraxinus ornus 5 m × 3.5 m after 10 years

Black locust: We do not recommend it for most Central European gardens. Behaves as an invasive tree. It suckers strongly from both stump and roots: damage to the roots or trunk, hard pruning and felling all trigger masses of suckers, sometimes several metres from the tree, in the lawn, in beds or next door.
Black locust grows larger: 8 m × 5 m after ten years, against 5 m × 3.5 m for Manna ash (an estimate: sources differ).
Black locust is hardier: down to -40 °C, against -23 °C for Manna ash.
Manna ash needs less care than Black locust.
Black locust has thorns, Manna ash does not.
Manna ash is the safer choice: we do not recommend planting Black locust in most gardens.
