Mentha spicata
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a perennial. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -29 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Toxic to dogs and cats. Sold in local shops from about €4.30.
One of the best-flavoured kitchen mints: its fresh, sweet-scented leaves go into tea, cold drinks, salads and meat dishes, and bees and butterflies like its summer flower spikes. It grows fast in moist, rich soil in sun or part shade and dislikes dry ground. It spreads very strongly by runners and rhizomes, so plant it in a pot or tub, or in a bed enclosed by a root barrier.
