Artemisia schmidtiana
Silvermound (Artemisia schmidtiana) is a perennial that reaches 25 cm × 45 cm after ten years. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: high.
It forms a low, rounded cushion of soft, finely cut, silvery grey leaves and is grown for that foliage, as its tiny yellowish flowers hardly show. It looks best on sunny, dry, lean, gravelly soil and suits rock and gravel gardens, border edges and pots, where it sets off purple and blue flowers nicely. In heavy, wet soil it rots quickly, and in midsummer the mound tends to fall open in the middle, so shear it back before it flowers.
