Athyrium filix-femina
Lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina) is a perennial that reaches 90 cm × 75 cm after ten years. Light: part shade, shade. Hardy down to -34 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Sold in local shops from about €6.
A deciduous fern with lacy, light green fronds that form a shuttlecock-shaped clump, good for filling shady, moist spots under trees and shrubs. Give it humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist; it only copes with sun if the ground never dries out. It dies back in winter and resprouts from the crown in spring.
