What it's good for, and what it isn't

A deciduous fern with lacy, light green fronds that form a shuttlecock-shaped clump, good for filling shady, moist spots under trees and shrubs. Give it humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist; it only copes with sun if the ground never dries out. It dies back in winter and resprouts from the crown in spring.

Watch out for
No serious pests or diseases. In the hot, dry summers of Central Europe the fronds brown and look tattered by midsummer unless watered, and they break easily in windy spots.
