What it's good for, and what it isn't

The pencil-thin, dark green column that defines Mediterranean landscapes: gardens almost always get the narrow columnar forms, which stay only one or two metres wide while eventually reaching 6 to 15 metres in height. It looks best as a specimen, by an entrance, planted in a row or, while young, in a large tub, and it handles heat, drought and chalky soil very well. It wants full sun and perfect drainage but dislikes hard frost, so plant it only in a warm spot sheltered from wind, ideally near a south-facing wall, and preferably in spring so that it roots in before winter.

Watch out for
In Central Europe its hardiness is borderline: below roughly -15 to -18 °C, especially in dry, windy frost, the foliage browns, shoot tips or whole branches die back, and young, newly planted trees can be killed outright. Do not plant it in frost pockets or cold, exposed gardens; in sheltered city gardens and milder regions it usually survives, though a hard winter can still damage it there. For the first few years mulch the base thickly, shade the foliage during windy frost and water on frost-free winter days, because as an evergreen it keeps losing moisture. Heavy, wet snow pulls apart and can snap the upright branches of the column, so tie it loosely for winter and shake the snow off. Its most serious disease is cypress canker (Seiridium cardinale): the bark sinks and oozes resin and the branches above turn reddish brown and die; cut affected parts back to healthy wood and avoid wounding the tree. Spider mites can bleach the foliage in hot, dry weather, and root rot kills it in waterlogged soil.
