What it's good for, and what it isn't

Modern hybrid coneflowers come from crosses of purple coneflower with its relatives: the same stiff-stemmed flower with a central cone, but in orange, yellow, red, coral and white, often in double pompon forms, and usually on a shorter, bushier plant. In return they are fussier than the species: shorter-lived and intolerant of wet soil in winter, so give them full sun and faultless drainage and plant in spring so they root in before winter. When choosing, look at height (40 to 90 cm) and flower form: singles feed pollinators and, in autumn, seed-eating birds, while doubles offer them very little.

Watch out for
Many hybrids vanish after two or three years, typically in winter, in damp heavy soil or when they go into winter with a weak basal rosette; seedlings that come up in their place will be a different colour. The most serious disease is aster yellows (a phytoplasma spread by leafhoppers): flowers turn green and deformed, there is no cure, and infected plants should be removed roots and all. Eriophyid mites cause distorted tufts growing out of the cone; cut such heads off. Leaf spots and powdery mildew also occur.
