What it's good for, and what it isn't

A medium-sized birch with an airy crown, grown for its peeling, chalk-white bark (nurseries mostly sell the whitest-barked variety, jacquemontii): it looks its best leafless in winter and turns golden yellow in autumn. It roots shallowly, so it wants evenly moist, cool soil and does poorly in hot, dry summers and in heat-trapping paved spots. Mulch the root zone, water in droughts and give it a place with light afternoon shade; its pollen is strongly allergenic.

Watch out for
It struggles in the hot, dry lowland summers of Central Europe: the shallow roots dry out quickly, stressed trees shed leaves early, die back and stay short-lived, and they are more prone to cankers. In North America the main killer of stressed birches is the bronze birch borer (Agrilus anxius); this pest does not occur in Europe. Aphids and leaf miners may appear. Do not prune in spring when the sap is rising, because the wounds bleed heavily.
