Betula utilis
Himalayan birch (Betula utilis) is a large tree. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -29 °C. Drought tolerance: low. Sold in local shops from about HUF 9,000.
A medium-sized birch with an airy crown, grown for its peeling, chalk-white bark (nurseries mostly sell the whitest-barked variety, jacquemontii): it looks its best leafless in winter and turns golden yellow in autumn. It roots shallowly, so it wants evenly moist, cool soil and does poorly in hot, dry summers and in heat-trapping paved spots. Mulch the root zone, water in droughts and give it a place with light afternoon shade; its pollen is strongly allergenic.
