What it's good for, and what it isn't

A huge, very fast North American poplar with triangular leaves and yellow autumn colour; nurseries mostly offer its narrow, purple-leaved form. On a large, moist, open site (a waterside or the edge of a farm) it gives shade and shelter quickly, but it does not belong in an ordinary family garden. The wood is brittle, the roots travel far and lift paving, and female trees cover everything in cottony fluff in late spring.

We do not recommend this plant
We do not recommend it for most Central European gardens. Further down we show what to plant instead.
Watch out for
The weak, brittle wood sheds large limbs in storms, and the tree is short-lived: after a few decades it declines fast. Its extensive, shallow root system lifts pavements and paving and grows into sewers, so keep it well away from buildings, pipes and hard surfaces. It can throw root sprouts and many seedlings, and the cottony seed fluff of female trees drifts for weeks and piles up in the yard (male cultivars make no fluff). It has many diseases and pests: dieback, canker, leaf spots, rust, powdery mildew, borers, aphids, caterpillars and scale. In Central Europe the eastern cottonwood and the hybrid poplars bred from it cross with the native, endangered black poplar and dilute its gene pool, so do not plant it near floodplains or natural poplar stands. It is on neither the EU nor the Hungarian invasive list.
