Populus deltoides
Eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides) is a large tree. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Sold in local shops from about €35. We do not recommend it for most Central European gardens.
A huge, very fast North American poplar with triangular leaves and yellow autumn colour; nurseries mostly offer its narrow, purple-leaved form. On a large, moist, open site (a waterside or the edge of a farm) it gives shade and shelter quickly, but it does not belong in an ordinary family garden. The wood is brittle, the roots travel far and lift paving, and female trees cover everything in cottony fluff in late spring.
