Heuchera sanguinea
Coral bells (Heuchera sanguinea) is a perennial. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -40 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Non-toxic to dogs, cats and children. Sold in local shops from about €4.30.
A low perennial with a mound of leaves that stays green through winter, topped from late spring to early summer by airy sprays of tiny coral-red bells on slender stems. Use it for edging, rock gardens, the front of a border or pots, in humus-rich, well-drained soil with afternoon shade in hot spots. This is the green-leaved, red-flowered species; the purple and bronze-leaved garden heucheras are hybrids of other species, grown mainly for foliage.
