What it's good for, and what it isn't

A small, hedgehog-like tussock of steel-blue blades that is native to the dry, lime-rich sand grasslands of the region, so it is happiest in full sun and poor, loose, dry soil. Glossy flower spikes rise above the leaves in early summer and fade to cream; use it as edging, in rock and gravel gardens or planted in numbers. Keep it out of rich, moist or heavy soil, where it dies out within two or three years.

Watch out for
A short-lived grass: in fertile, irrigated or heavy, wet soil it often dies after only 2 to 3 years, with the centre of the clump going bald and dying out first. It lasts longer on poor, sharply drained sand; divide tired clumps in spring or replace them with young plants. It stretches and flops in shade. In the summer heat of Central Europe it may go partly dormant and look dull, which is not a disease. No serious pests or diseases.
