What it's good for, and what it isn't

A very narrow, steel-blue column that takes up little ground yet draws a vertical line you can see from across the garden. It wants full sun and free-draining soil and shrugs off drought once established, but thins out in shade or wet ground. Its short upright branches cope with snow better than those of similar blue columnar junipers.

Watch out for
Root rot in wet, heavy soil and twig blight in wet springs. Junipers host rust fungi that can spread to nearby pear and apple trees. Scale insects and spider mites turn up occasionally. In Central Europe heavy wet snow can pull the column apart, so tying it in for winter is worthwhile.
