Prunus dulcis
Almond (Prunus dulcis) is a fruit plant. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -23 °C. Drought tolerance: high. Sold in local shops from about €34.
The earliest fruit tree to flower: the white and pink blossom on bare branches in late winter and early spring makes it worth growing as an ornamental too, and the nuts are harvested in late summer and early autumn when the green hull splits. Most cultivars are self-sterile, so plant two cultivars that flower at the same time near each other (the Tétényi cultivars pollinate each other well), or choose a self-fertile one such as Tuono or Supernova. It is sold grafted and its size depends on the rootstock, usually a 4 to 6 m tree in a garden; give it the warmest, sunniest spot away from frost pockets, in loose, chalky, well-drained soil, where it also copes well with drought.
