What it's good for, and what it isn't

Peach-leaved bellflower sends up slender, upright stems from a rosette of narrow leaves in early summer, carrying large blue or white bells. It suits cottage-style and naturalistic borders, works well under roses and shrubs, makes a good cut flower and is visited by bees. Give it moist but well-drained soil and some afternoon shade in hot spots, and cut off the faded stems if you do not want seedlings.

Watch out for
Slugs and snails are very fond of it and can eat young shoots and the rosette down to the ground. Rust, powdery mildew and leaf spot can appear on the leaves. It prefers cool summers: in the hot, dry summers of Central Europe it struggles in full sun, so plant it in part shade and water it in drought. Tall stems may need support in windy sites, and in good conditions it self-seeds freely.
