Fraxinus angustifolia
Narrow-leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) is a large tree. Light: full sun. Hardy down to -23 °C. Drought tolerance: medium. Sold in local shops from about HUF 2,800. We do not recommend it for most Central European gardens.
A large tree with fine, narrow leaflets and glossy green foliage; its regional subspecies, the Hungarian or Danubian ash, is a tree of lowland floodplain woods. Nurseries mostly sell the fruitless 'Raywood' (claret ash), whose leaves turn wine red to plum purple in autumn and which copes well with heat, city air, paving and some drought. It is only for large gardens, and you should know that ash dieback attacks this species too: local foresters name it, next to European ash, as the species hit hardest, while other sources say it holds up somewhat better, so it is a risky choice.
