What it's good for, and what it isn't

A bushy perennial that produces large, golden yellow daisy flowers from early summer into autumn and is good for cutting too. It is happiest in a sunny spot with lean, free-draining soil and takes heat and dry weather well, appreciating an occasional watering only in long droughts. Expect it to be short-lived: it wears out after two or three years, so divide it in time or let it self-seed. Deadheading keeps it flowering for months.

Watch out for
A short-lived perennial: plants usually exhaust themselves and vanish after two or three years, so divide them every two to three years or leave some seed to renew the planting. The crown rots in wet, poorly drained soil, especially in winter. The foliage can get powdery mildew, leaf spot and rust, and slugs graze young shoots. In rich soil or with too little sun it grows lanky and flops. Without deadheading it can self-seed heavily.
