What it's good for, and what it isn't

The best known Japanese flowering cherry: in late April and early May it is covered in fully double, vivid pink blossom, on a crown that is vase-shaped when young and spreading later. Plant it as a specimen in a sunny, well-drained spot and allow for a crown eight to ten metres wide in time. It is not a long-lived tree and it dislikes waterlogged soil and hard pruning.

Watch out for
Prone to the usual flowering cherry troubles: blossom wilt, leaf spot, bacterial canker with gumming, silver leaf, plus aphids and scale. Infections enter through wounds, so prune only when necessary and then in dry summer weather. A short-lived tree that often declines after 15 to 25 years.
