What it's good for, and what it isn't

A vigorous deciduous woody climber that carries large salmon to orange-red trumpet flowers at the shoot tips from midsummer into autumn; the flowers are larger and the growth a little more restrained than in the American trumpet vine. It clings with aerial roots but has to be tied in for the first years, and a heavy old plant needs a strong pergola, fence or arbour. It flowers properly only in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot, and because it blooms on new growth you can cut it back hard in early spring. Expect root suckers, and a few years of waiting before the first flowers.

Watch out for
The aerial roots grip into cracks and can pull off render, and once the plant reaches the roof it can lift tiles and wreck gutters, so grow it on a separate strong support rather than on a rendered house wall. It suckers from the roots, with shoots coming up in beds and lawn some way from the plant; it is more restrained than its American parent, but the suckers need removing regularly and seedlings are worth pulling out too. In Central Europe late spring frost often kills the young shoots, young plants need a mulch over the base in their first winters, and in a cool or shaded spot it hardly flowers. Aphids may appear.
