Campsis × tagliabuana
Hybrid trumpet vine (Campsis × tagliabuana) is a climber. Light: full sun, part shade. Hardy down to -23 °C. Drought tolerance: high. Sold in local shops from about €29.
A vigorous deciduous woody climber that carries large salmon to orange-red trumpet flowers at the shoot tips from midsummer into autumn; the flowers are larger and the growth a little more restrained than in the American trumpet vine. It clings with aerial roots but has to be tied in for the first years, and a heavy old plant needs a strong pergola, fence or arbour. It flowers properly only in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot, and because it blooms on new growth you can cut it back hard in early spring. Expect root suckers, and a few years of waiting before the first flowers.
