What it's good for, and what it isn't

A low cranesbill that knits into a dense carpet of glossy leaves, spicily aromatic when rubbed, with pink or white flowers from late spring to midsummer. It is a dependable ground cover in sun or part shade and works well under shrubs and roses, though it flowers less in deep shade. It sets no seed and spreads by trailing stems, so it is easy to keep in bounds: just cut off whatever wanders too far.

Watch out for
It has few problems. In hot, dry summers the foliage can look tired and brown after flowering: shear it back and water, and it soon regrows. Leaf spot or rust may appear in humid weather, and vine weevil larvae sometimes eat the roots. It dies out in waterlogged soil.
